An otoplasty procedure involves surgically removing small amounts of cartilage from the back of the ears so that they lay close to the head. When your ears stick out further than normal, it makes your head look small and your ears look too large. Otoplasty helps the ears sit nearer to the sides of the head, creating a more normal and proportionate appearance.
How is an Otoplasty Performed?
To perform an otoplasty, a surgeon makes a thin incision in the cartilage behind the ear. Depending on the size and shape of the ear and the amount it protrudes, the surgeon may fold the cartilage so that the ear lays flatter, or he or she may remove a piece of cartilage to produce the same effect. Then, the surgeon closes the incision with sutures and heavily bandages the ear or ears. After just a few days, the bandages can be removed. Meanwhile, the patient will use prescription pain medication to encourage healing.
Once the heavy bandages come off, the ears are fitted with a light dressing that is to be worn for approximately three weeks. The patient will need to avoid sports and other activities that could disturb the incision site.
What is the Purpose of Otoplasty?
Otoplasty isn’t necessary to improve hearing or other ear functions. However, some people might feel self-conscious about having large ears. The ear is mostly made of cartilage, which is a dense, pliable tissue. Removing or changing the shape of this cartilage will only affect the aesthetics of the ear.
Who is a Candidate for the Otoplasty Procedure?
Otoplasty is most commonly performed on anyone who is unsatisfied with the shape of their ears.
